The International Program Office of ANSO Green Aral Sea Science Initiative co-hosted “A way to the Green Aral Sea: Innovation and Cooperation – Young Scientist Forum”

On December 16, 2022, with the support of the Ministry of Innovative Development of the Republic of Uzbekistan, the International Program Office of ANSO Green Aral Sea Science Initiative (ANSO IPO), the Association for Combating Desertification of the Alliance of International Science Organizations (ANSO-ACD), the Joint Uzbek-China Key Lab of Ecobiomes of Arid Lands, the Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography, CAS (XIEG), the International Innovation Center for Aral Sea Basin under the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan (IICAS), the Tashkent Institute of Irrigation and Agricultural Mechanization Engineers, National Research University (NRU-TIIAME) co-hosted “A way to the Green Aral Sea: Innovation and Cooperation – Young Scientist Forum” in Nukus, Republic of Karakalpakstan, Uzbekistan. Nearly 100 experts, young scholars and students from Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and China attended the forum.
 
 
Khabibullaev B., Deputy Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Karakalpakstan and Minister of Investments and Foreign Trade of the Republic of Karakalpakstan, Tuychiev O., Director General of National office for Implementation of Innovation and Technology Transfer under the Ministry of Innovative Development of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Yang Xianren, First Secretary for Science and Technology of the Embassy of China in Uzbekistan, Ubaydullaev N., Counselor of the Embassy of Uzbekistan in China, Ungalov A., Head of the Department of Innovation Development of Copper Industry Clusters and Economy of the Ministry of Innovative Development of the Republic of Uzbekistan, and Zhang Yuanming, Director General of XIEG attended the conference and delivered welcome speeches online and offline.
 
Zhang Yuanming, Director General of XIEG, said that in recent years, XIEG has made a lot of progress in the aspects of water resource management, ecological restoration and talent training through the collaborative activities with Uzbekistan institutions, such as platform setup, scientific research and capacity enhancement. XIEG has awarded degrees and certificates to nearly 100 postgraduates and postdoctoral fellows from Central Asia. He hoped that this forum will encourage and inspire more outstanding young scientists to devote themselves to the innovation and sustainable development of the Aral Sea region.
 
 
Khabibullaev B., Deputy Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Karakalpakstan and Minister of Investments and Foreign Trade of the Republic of Karakalpakstan, stated that the ecological disaster in the Aral Sea cannot be solved by one country or region alone and need the help and support from the international community. On behalf of the Republic of Karakalpakstan, he thanked the forum organizers, especially XIEG, for providing a platform for young scientists to explore innovative and green technologies to solve the Aral Sea issue. “Young people represent the future,” he said, “I hope the young generation of scientists can contribute wisdom and strength to the green development of the Aral Sea.”
 
During the Invited Reports session, Yang Youlin, Specially Appointed Research Fellow of XIEG, and Jollibekov B., Research Fellow of the Karakalpak Institute of Agriculture and Agrotechnologies, gave their reports on the " Technical Measures to Mitigate Desertification, Land Degradation, and Drought (DLDD) in China" and "Development of Planting Technology Using the Nursery Block", respectively.
 
During the Youth Reports session, nine young scientists from Karakalpak State University, Institute of Botany of the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan, Karakalpak Institute of Agriculture and Agrotechnologies, National University of Uzbekistan, Karakalpak Research Institute of Agriculture, Scientific and Information Center of the Interstate Coordination Water Commission of Central Asian, Kyzylorda University, XIEG and TIIAME, shared their research progress and perspectives on the desertification of South Aral Sea, groundwater level dynamics, pasture degradation and management, biological soil improvement, ecological assessment of water bodies, biodiversity dynamics, soil water and evapotranspiration, cultural exchanges and international cooperation. 
 
At the end of the forum, the organizing committee of this forum awarded the "Innovation and Cooperation Award of the Green Aral Sea" to the nine young scientists. Two of them will be selected and financed a short visit and training in China by ANSO IPO.
 
Aiming to be an international cooperation platform for young talents in the field of sustainable development of the Aral Sea Basin, this forum will share the latest scientific and technological trends, promote interdisciplinary research, encourage more outstanding young scientists to devote themselves to the green innovation of the Aral Sea, and provide talent support for the ecological governance of the Aral Sea.
