On February 25, 2023, the Sustainable Poverty Reduction Development and Rural Revitalization Science Forum was held in Beijing. It was jointly organized by the Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research, the Chinese Academy of Sciences (IGSNRR-CAS), the Alliance of International Science Organizations (ANSO), the Alliance of Poverty Reduction and Development (ANSO-APRD), the International Geographical Union Commission on Agricultural Geography and Land Engineering (IGU-AGLE), and Key Laboratory of Regional Sustainable Development Modeling of CAS. Over 100 representatives from China and abroad attended the meeting in a hybrid mode.
Mr. JIA Bo, the Senior Manager of ANSO, also attended the forum and delivered an opening speech on behalf of ANSO. He pointed out that poverty reduction is an important task that is of common concern to not only China but also to all mankind. Therefore, scientific and technological cooperation with the international community to promote global poverty reduction and sustainable development is an important goal and priority direction of ANSO’s work. Meanwhile, Prof. Michael Meadows, President of IGU, also delivered a speech and presented the IGU Distinguished Geographical Practice Award to Prof. LIU Yansui, President of ANSO-APRD. Prof. ZHANG Guoyou, Vice President of the Geographical Society of China, offered his congratulations on the successful conduction of the forum.
In the academic report session, the participants of the project, including Prof. Michael Meadows, Prof. ZHOU Chenghu from IGSNRR, Prof. FAN Shenggen from China Agricultural University, Prof. FU Bojie from IGU and CAS, gave reports on their featured resource and research progress respectively. After the reports, Prof. WANG Liming, Director of the Center of Big Data Analysis and Simulation of the Key Laboratory of Regional Sustainable Development Modeling of CAS, introduced and released the Big Data Platform for Sustainable Poverty Reduction and Development (International Version).
During the symposium session, nine experts and two county leaders of the demonstration bases gave presentations on sustainable poverty reduction, rural revitalization model and effectiveness evaluation, urban-rural integration development, and agricultural food system. The experts and scholars discussed the current frontier issues of sustainable poverty reduction and rural revitalization, and proposed the initiative of designating February 25 every year as “Geography Serves Major Strategies Day”.
