ANSO Secretariat Attend the Webinar on the South-South and Triangular Cooperation for Socio-Economic Development in South

On 23 February, Prof. Jinghua Cao, Executive Director of the ANSO Secretariat gave a lecture at the webinar on the topic of the South-South and Triangular Cooperation for Socio-Economic Development in South at the invitation of the Commission on Science and Technology for Sustainable Development in the South (COMSATS). The webinar was chaired by the Prof. Ashraf H. Shaalan, the Chairperson of the COMSATS Coordinating Council.

 

This lecture series, initiated by COMSATS invited eminent experts to share their insights on how to address the scio-economic needs of the developing countries in an effective way through the South-South cooperation. Prof. Cao shared valuable insights on the S&T South-South cooperation in targeting various social-economic challenges. He said that the problems that exist in poverty, hunger, malnutrition, eco-environment and the effective and sustainable use of local resources for social wellbeing in the South can only be effectively resolved by scientific and innovative approaches. China has provided significant contributions to tackling these challenges in the South. In the lecture, Prof. Cao, gave about no less than 10 examples to elaborate the efforts and actions of the institutes and experts of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in helping the developing countries to address some of the common problems and challenges such as assisting and providing clean drinking water, protecting biodiversity conservation and using local resources to achieve development. He also presented the efforts and programs of ANSO in in the support of these activities. He specifically stressed the important role that ANSO plays in partnership with ANSO family in fighting against the pandemic. He always encourages the audience to further disseminate ANSO program initiatives as well as non-ANSO members to make a further study of ANSO. As ending remarks, Prof. Cao propagated the noble cause that ANSO stands for: the betterment of the entire global community.

 

In spite of the great strides people in the South have made most of the countries there still face many challenges and problems. Science and innovation are much needed to address them. The international community should enhance cooperation and efforts in these regards. As a young international science organization, ANSO understands well it can play an important role in it, particularly in terms of fostering concrete and productive cooperation.
