ANSO Project on Marine Microplastic Pollution Kicked off in Indonesia

Assessment and response to the impact of marine microplastic pollution

The ANSO Collaborative Research project entitled “Assessment and response to the impact of marine microplastic pollution on ecological security in the Coral Triangle” held its launching ceremony at the Indonesian Research Center for Oceanography-BRIN in Jakarta on April 3, 2023. More than 50 participants attended the meeting on-site and online.



This project focuses on investigating the status of microplastic pollution in the Coral Triangle and its influences on marine biology and the ecosystem and developing the technology of microplastic degradation using microorganisms. The Institute of Oceanology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IOCAS) leads the project in collaboration with the Indonesian Research Center for Oceanography- BRIN, the University of the Philippines, and the University of Papua New Guinea.

The ceremony was jointly chaired by Prof. Udhi Hernawan, Director of the Indonesian Research Center for Oceanography-BRIN, and Prof. WANG Fan, Director of IOCAS. Prof. Ocky Radjasa, President of the College of Geosciences and Oceanography at BRIN, expressed support for this project and emphasized the importance of multilateralcooperation in addressing the challenge; Prof. CAO Jinghua, the Executive Director of the ANSO Secretariat, delivered a video speech expressing high expectations on the project, hoping that it will address this big sustainable developmental challenge for the benefits of all. Prof. DIAO Xinyuan, the Principal Investigator of the project, provided a detailed introduction on the project’s scientific goals, methods, and international collaboration mechanism of the project; Ms. WANG Zhongxiu, Program officer of the ANSO Secretariat, briefly introduced on ANSO and the potential international cooperation opportunities it provides. Ten scientists involved in the project from China, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Papua New Guinea presented their research progress, ideas, and aspirations for this cooperation.

In the following days, Prof. DIAO Xinyuan and Dr. Wang Zheng visited Minister Yan of the Infrastructure Department of BRIN in Indonesia and Director Nugroho of the Scientific Research Vessel Management Office to discuss the preparations for the 2023 Indonesia-China Joint Scientific Expedition.
