From April 9-14, 2025, an international training workshop on Climate Change and Water Security Effects along the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) was held in Islamabad, Pakistan. The event was sponsored by the CAS-ANSO Conference Program 2024.

Co-organized by the China-Pakistan Joint Research Center on Earth Sciences (CPJRC) and the Pakistan Academy of Sciences (PAS), the six-day event gathered over 60 senior researchers and young scholars from China, Pakistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan. It was to mark the UN’s designation of 2025 as the International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation (IYGP).

Dr. Zia Ul-Qayyum, Executive Director of Pakistan’s Higher Education Commission (HEC), and Mr. Xu Hangtian, Minister Counselor of the Chinese Embassy in Pakistan, addressed the Workshop. Both underscored the vital importance of international cooperation in tackling pressing climate challenges in the region, particularly in building climate-resilient infrastructure and sustainable water management systems to foster socioeconomic development.

This training workshop featured a series of lectures and discussions on critical issues, such as climate change impacts on the cryosphere, water security in the Indus River Basin, disaster risk reduction strategies, and applications of big data in environmental monitoring. Leading scientists from the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and Pakistani academic institutions shared their expertise and research findings with all the participants.

The event paved the way for future collaborations in climate adaptation and water resource management. Further details can be found in the CPJRC’s official news release at: http://cpjrc.imde.ac.cn/en/news/ne/202504/t20250416_534909.html.
