“Disaster Risk Reduction Knowledge Services for Global South and Cases Sharing” endorsed in the First Set IDSSD of UNESCO

23 07, 2025

Recently, the "Disaster Risk Reduction Knowledge Services for Global South and Cases Sharing" Project led by the Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IGSNRR, CAS), has been selected as the United Nations’ International Decade of Sciences for Sustainable Development (2024-2033) (IDSSD) Project. Supported by the ANSO joint research project (Project No.: ANSO-CR-KP-2022-06), this initiative involved multiple institutions, including the IGSNRR, Northeast Institute of Geography and Agroecology of CAS, University of Nottingham Ningbo China, Wuhan University, National Science Library of CAS, and Central South University. Together, they provided disaster risk reduction knowledge services and case-sharing for the Global South, while actively promoting its global application.

The "Disaster Risk Reduction Knowledge Services for Global South and Cases Sharing" Project, led by Prof. Wang Juanle of IGSNRR, builds upon the existing IKCEST-DRR platform auspicious UNESCO, integrating geographic intelligence and big data technologies to develop a rapid disaster data aggregation and online knowledge application service system for five major disaster scenarios (earthquakes, floods, heatwaves, sandstorms, and droughts) in the Global South region (such as Africa, Central Asia, and South Asia). It provides knowledge services for disaster prevention, rescue, and recovery, and offers a multi-language service interface, ensuring efficient and user-friendly open services for individuals from diverse linguistic backgrounds. The project aims to provide multi-faceted support for disaster risk reduction and rescue in various fields in the Global South, and foster sustainable development within the Belt and Road Initiative.
