ANSO-World Mollisols Association held the International Workshop on Mollisols Erosion and Degradation in Harbin

ANSO-WMA

26 08, 2024

From July 20 to 25, 2024, the ANSO World Mollisols Association (ANSO-WMA) and the Northeast Institute of Geography and Agroecology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences jointly held the International Workshop on Mollisols Erosion and Degradation, in collaboration with the Science and Technology Department of Heilongjiang Province, the Science and Technology Association of Heilongjiang Province, and the Science and Technology Bureau of Harbin City. The theme of this workshop was "Research Progress on Mollisols Erosion and Degradation, Mollisols Degradation Prevention and Control, and New Technologies for Arable Land Conservation." More than 200 experts and scholars from China, Australia, the United States, Russia, Argentina, the Czech Republic, the United Kingdom, Austria, and Japan engaged in the field of mollisol conservation and utilization participated in the workshop.

The opening ceremony was chaired by ZHANG Xingyi, the Vice President of ANSO-WMA. The event was attended by JIANG Ming, Director General of the Northeast Institute of Geography and Agroecology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Prof. Shahbaz Khan, General Representative of UNESCO Regional Office for East Asia, SUN Hui, Department Director of the International Cooperation Bureau of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and SHI Zhaohui, Deputy Director General of the Science and Technology Department of Heilongjiang Province, who each delivered speeches. Twenty-two experts from domestic and international institutions and universities presented reports on the formation and quality evolution of mollisol, erosion and risk prediction of mollisol, the mechanism of mollisol degradation, prevention and control, and technical strategies for mollisol conservation. The attendees focused on establishing quantitative diagnostic standards for the erosion and degradation of mollisol worldwide, developing a comprehensive evaluation technology system for mollisol degradation, enriching the theory of mollisol erosion and degradation, and offering constructive and feasible suggestions.

During the workshop, more than 50 experts and scholars visited the Heilongjiang Hailun Farmland Ecosystem National Field Scientific Observation and Research Station and the Hailun Water and Soil Conservation Monitoring Research Station, Chinese Academy of Sciences. During the field investigation, station staff and researchers described various long-term experiments and technologies for mollisol conservation and utilization, leading to in-depth exchanges among the participants. The ANSO-WMA will focus on breakthroughs in mollisol conservation, such as soil organic matter promotion mechanisms and technologies the mechanisms for preventing and controlling gully erosion, and daily forecasting and early warning of mollisol erosion. Through scientific and technological innovation, the ANSO-WMA aims to contribute to the high-quality development of the Belt and Road Initiative, strengthen international scientific and technological cooperation and exchanges in mollisol conservation, and provide important scientific and technological support for food security.
